Berniece passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at the Pender Community Hospital.

Berniece Kaufman was born March 3, 1925 on a farm northeast of Beemer, NE to Sam and Mary (Huebert) Oswald. Her family lived on farms in the Cuming County area of Nebraska. She attended country schools through 10th grade and was baptized at the Plum Creek Mennonite Church as a teenager.
On December 26, 1950, she married Leslie Kaufman of Manson, IA. They made their home on a farm near Manson until moving to a farm south of Wakefield, NE in 1960. A daughter Mary and son Merle were born in Iowa. A son Lowell was born after their move to Nebraska. In 1964 following the death of her husband in a tractor accident, Berniece chose to remain on the farm and continued to raise her children there.
After receiving her GED in 1974, Berniece went to work as a cook in the Wakefield Health Care Center and worked there through the 1980s.
Berniece was a faithful member of Beemer Mennonite Church, where she taught Sunday School periodically and participated in the Ladies Sewing Circle for many years.
She belonged to a neighborhood Birthday Club and the Serve All Extension Club.
Berniece moved to Beemer in 2006 and lived there until she entered the Wakefield Health Care Center in 2016.
Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were a source of joy. She enjoyed being out in God’s creation; observing the clouds, watching and listening to birds, planting many a tree, tending to her flowers and working in the garden. She had a special love of animals- especially horses. She also enjoyed sewing, reading and cooking.
